Computational Electromagnetics

Numerous numerical methods for electromagnetic and photonic devices, Computational Electromagnetics and Computer Aided Design, including: Finite Element Method (FEM), Finite Difference Method (FDM), Beam Propagation Method (BPM), Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) Method, Coupled Mode Theory (CMT), Adaptive Meshing, Perfectly Matched Layer (PML), Conformal Mapping, Ray Tracing, MoM, and more.

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Waterloo, Ontario, CANADA

Research Assistant Jan. 2001 — July. 2005
Developed sophisticated and efficient FEM packages for various electromagnetic/photonic problems, including both guided-wave and beam-propagation analysis.
These general, powerful, versatile, accurate and efficient codes are applicable to problems involving complicated geometries, inhomogeneous media, anisotropic dielectrics, lossy materials, strongly-guiding structures and polarization-dependent problems.

Postdoctoral Researcher Aug. 2005— Jul. 2006
Applications of commercial software (HFSS, FEKO, ADS, AutoCAD, FEMLAB, RSoft) and programming for a vehicular wireless communication problem, antenna design, and a photonic bandgap device (PBG) problem.

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Waterloo, Ontario, CANADA

Research Assistant Jan. 2001 — Jul. 2005
Designed a category of novel asymmetric polarization converters on both III-V semiconductors (InP and GaAs) and Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI).
Novel SOI polarization rotators with asymmetric external guiding layers show numerous advantages over traditional configurations. Peer researchers have employed this structure for high performance III-V polarization converters.
General and fast design procedures, regardless of material system, wafer dimension, external-layer configuration, and longitudinal loading.
